Many thanks to everyone who participated!!

Columbia Water and Light reported a 1.58 megawatt-hour drop in usage for the hour (better than last year). This is the average amount of electricity that 1480 homes would use for that hour, and it avoided the emissions of as much CO2 as taking 240 cars off the road for a day. Thanks everyone!!

EARTH HOUR INVITATION

Columbians are being urged by Mayoral Proclamation to observe Earth Hour! Saturday, March 27th, 2010, 8:30PM-9:30PM, Columbians and area citizens will turn off lights and non-essential electricity in homes and buildings to take part in a symbolic “wave of darkness” encircling the globe, in solidarity with world citizens, to pledge their support for a sustainable future on planet Earth.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. A year later Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating, including Columbians! Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome's Colosseum, stood in darkness, as symbols of hope and solidarity for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In 2009, millions, in over 4000 cities in 88 countries, “switched-off” pledging support to reduce the effect of global climate change. Join with your fellow Columbians for Earth Hour 2010, brought to you by the Columbia Climate Change Coalition, with participation from Mayor Darwin Hindman, the Columbia City Council, the City of Columbia, and other community organizations, businesses, and schools. Join citizens around the world in saving money; reducing our environmental impact; creating “green” jobs and whole new industries and economies; improving our national and homeland security; reducing healthcare costs by improving our health through a cleaner environment; educating about sustainability and the impacts of global climate change; and having fun with family, friends and neighbors all at the same time!

Start planning now to observe Earth Hour 2010, Saturday, March 27th, 8:30PM-9:30PM. Invite family, friends, and neighbors into backyards, enjoy the night sky! Discuss sustainability, how you're “going green”, reducing your carbon footprint, saving money and how you plan to save even more! Plan a dinner by candle light, invite family and friends---play cards, board games, read a book by flashlight. Buy a solar or human- powered flashlight for the occasion---expand your safety equipment while boosting the economy. Make it fun and educational! Join others here, wherever you are, and around the world “switching-off” in symbolic solidarity, celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all share---our planet, Earth!!!

Help make international Earth Hour 2010 the biggest yet!!

More Than 5 Reasons to Observe Earth Hour

Earth Hour has become a global sustainability movement in 3 years. Last year, more than 4,000 major cities in 88 countries “switched-off” non-essential electricity to call for our leaders to move strongly towards a renewable, more sustainable energy future for all countries on the planet.

If you can agree with any one or more of these reasons why sustainability would be a good idea, then you should try to participate in Earth Hour and send a message to everyone that you support creating a sustainable future.

1) Save money, from utilities to transportation, to health care costs.

2) Create clean, renewable energy jobs and whole new industries and economies.

3) Reduce homeland and national security threats.

4) Create a cleaner environment and all it’s benefits.

5) Create a sustainable future for generations to come.

Columbia’s Mayor, Darwin Hindman, with the vote of the City Council, just issued a Proclamation for Earth Hour Day and Hour, Saturday, March 27th, 8:30 pm-9:30pm, urging participation, discussing the issue, turning off non-essential electricity and “voting with your switch”! Read his Proclamation, find out about Earth Hour, ways to participate, what’s going on in Columbia, and more ideas to “go green” at www.ColumbiaClimateChangeCoalition.org
